Hanging Leg Raise: Advanced Core Work That Starts With Your Grip
The hanging leg raise trains your lower abs hard — but only once your grip and shoulders can hold a dead hang without swinging.
· 2 min read

A hanging leg raise is one of the more demanding core exercises around, and much of that demand is on your grip and shoulders before your abs even get involved — which is why building toward it in stages beats forcing it too soon.
How to do it
- 1Hang from a bar — arms fully extended, shoulders engaged rather than fully passive, core braced before you start.
- 2Keep your body still — minimizing any swing before you begin the rep.
- 3Raise your legs — lifting them by curling your pelvis, not just swinging your legs forward.
- 4Bring them to at least hip height — or higher, toward your chest, for a fuller range.
- 5Lower under control — resisting the swing on the way back down rather than letting momentum take over.

3 sets of 8–12 reps — bent-knee raises are a reasonable regression if straight-leg raises are currently out of reach, and both build the same movement pattern.
Common mistakes
- Swinging for momentum. Using body swing to throw the legs up trains momentum, not your abs. Keep the movement controlled and minimize any pendulum motion.
- Only moving from the hips. Raising the legs without curling the pelvis limits how much the lower abs actually contract. Think about tucking your hips under, not just lifting your legs.
- Rushing before your grip is ready. If your grip fails before your abs do, that's a sign to build hang time and pulling strength first — a fatigued grip forcing an early drop is a common injury moment.
Safety note
Build a solid dead hang and some pulling strength before loading this exercise heavily — grip and shoulder readiness matter as much here as ab strength.
This is an advanced exercise for a reason. Build the hang, control the swing, and curl from the hips — the lower-ab work follows from getting those right.
Train it as part of a real plan
