Leg Extension: Isolating the Quads Directly

The leg extension is one of the few exercises that trains the quads with almost nothing else involved.

Leg Extension demonstration

The leg extension isolates the quadriceps almost completely, with no hip or ankle involvement to share the load — useful for targeted work, but also why the knee joint takes stress that a compound lift would spread out.

How to do it

  1. 1Adjust the pad to your shinsjust above your ankle, and set the seat so your knees line up with the machine's pivot point.
  2. 2Grip the handlesfor stability, keeping your torso against the backrest.
  3. 3Extend your legsstraighten your knees by pushing the pad up and out.
  4. 4Pause at the tophold the contraction for a moment at full extension.
  5. 5Lower with controltake two to three seconds returning to the start rather than letting the weight drop.

Sets and reps

3 sets of 12–15 reps, often used as a finisher after squats, lunges, or a leg press rather than as the first exercise of a leg day.

Common mistakes

  • Using momentum. Kicking the weight up rather than extending under control reduces the muscle's work and adds stress to the knee. Slow the rep down.
  • Machine set up incorrectly. A misaligned pivot point or pad position puts uneven stress through the knee. Take the time to adjust the seat properly before loading it heavily.
  • Going too heavy too soon. Because the knee is doing all the work with no help from the hip, this exercise punishes overloading more than most machines. Build up gradually.

Safety note

If you have any existing knee issues, this is worth discussing with a physiotherapist before loading it heavily — the isolated nature of the exercise means the knee gets no assistance from other joints.

This is a finishing exercise, not a foundation. Use it to add direct quad work after your main lifts, not to replace them.
